Demonstration in front of the Senate about PackwoodSenator Bob Packwood

Demonstration in front of the Senate

At least 29 women, both employees and campaign workers, have come forward to accuse Sen. Bob Packwood (R-Ore.) of sexual harassment, and in some cases actual assault. Although the story did not break until after he was narrowly re-elected in November 1992, NOW urged the Senate Ethics Committee not to officially seat Packwood until the charges had been investigated and resolved.

The demonstration in the photo took place in January 1993 on the day the newly elected and re-elected Senators were seated. At NOW's request, it was announced by Senate leadership that all of the Senators were being seated "conditionally." Active in the campaign to unseat Packwood is Oregonians for Ethical Representation, led by former Oregon Supreme Court Justice Betty Roberts.
