I am at a loss and am looking for advice. I work in a very small office of only six people. Two men, the owner and the CFO, and four women, myself, the operations manager, and three female assistants. Almost a year ago I approached the owner's office during business hours and, through the glass in his door, was faced with what can only be described as a "gynecologist's view" of a woman on his computer screen. I had heard that he was very involved in pornography but figured that as long as it didn't effect me, what did I care. Well, now it was effecting me. Long story short, I found out that not only the other women in the office but the man had had similar experiences. I spoke with the CFO, who is second in command, as an employee and as a fellow manager. We agreed that the issue had to be addressed. He mentioned the problem to the owner and later told me that he had been assured that nothing more needed to be said.
Now it's happening again. Just yesterday I approached the owner's office and was faced with a nude woman lying in a suggestive position. Yes, believe it or not, the owner is not only still doing this but hasn't even rearranged his office so that his computer screen can't be seen from the door. I looked away while I knocked and when I looked back the image was gone. I proceeded to enter to discuss the business at hand then immediately went to the CFO. The response I received from him could be described as nothing other than "Deal with it." Specifically, he said that he had spoken to the owner once before and would not address the issue again.
As an employee of this company, female or not, and being an adult in modern society, I'm not so much shocked at what I have seen as the total lack of respect for the law, for what is appropriate in a business environment, and for the feelings of the individuals who spend each day here. I feel my hands are tied. I have followed the chain of command only to be told basically, "You're on your own." As a manager of this company, I feel a responsibility to be part of creating a pleasant, not to mention ethical, work environment, but again, my hands are tied. At this point the only options I can see are to deal with it or to quit this job I otherwise love and sue the SOB.
Is there any kind of mediation for a situation like this? Should I confront him myself? I don't know how to deal with this so no one gets hurt.
